Introduction to Screenplay WritingOnline Brought to you by Elizabeth Ayres Center for Creative Writing
The power of story is the power to connect all people everywhere. Through storytelling and mythology, every culture on the planet perpetuates a dialogue about who we are, why we are here, and what makes our lives worth living.
With movies accessible at the touch of a button or the click of a mouse, there's a greater need than ever for stories written for the big and small screen. Who is going to write those stories?
Even if you have no screenwriting experience whatsoever, you've grown up watching movies. You wanted to jump up on those desks in The Dead Poets Society and scream "Carpe Diem!" at the top of your lungs because you felt the urgency inside yourself. Seize the day! Touch someone's heart. Change the world!
That's what movies can do. And you can learn to do it too.
Tailored to the needs of those with little or no screenwriting experience, Introduction to Screenplay Writing takes a step-by-step approach to the form. It shows you how to mine your heart for the story living inside you, the story you must tell now. You'll get the tools you need to make that story come alive, learning how to:
- construct a scene;
- manipulate beats, cuts, images;
- identify and develop a theme with dramatic action;
- build three-dimensional characters with strong, tangible goals;
- use professional screenplay formatting;
and much more. By the end of the course, you'll be ready to start writing the movie you want to write, need to write, know the world is waiting to see.
This 5-week online class is led by Merridith Allen, an award-winning screenwriter and playwright whose work has been produced by such prestigious venues as The Manhattan Repertory Theater and The Provincetown Theater. She conducts workshops at international sites such as the San Miguel de Allende Writer's Conference and The Virginia Center for Creative Arts program in Auvillar, France.
Merridith brings to her teaching, her zest for life, her love of storytelling and her passion for unearthing the creative spirit in everyone. She'll encourage you to take big risks, and believes that inspiration's magical seed flowers fully when we connect to our inner emotional truth. Call it the power of the collective unconscious. Call it a miracle. Call it crazy. But never call it impossible. Not in Merridith's class.
Introduction to Screenplay Writing is suitable for beginners as well as for more advanced writers seeking to rekindle their passion for the form.
