COMIC CHARACTERS AND COMIC STORYTELLING

In this session we’ll be covering comic characters – what makes them funny and what makes them tick. We’ll be looking at:

  • The comic perspective
  • Flaws
  • Humanity
  • Exaggeration
  • Cherished belief

Armed with this information, you can easily discover how your characters are funny, and also reliably predict what they will do in any situation. To understand what those situations are, we’ll take a look at the many types of comic stories available to us, including:

  • Fish out of water
  • Comic opposites
  • Center and eccentrics
  • Ensemble

We’ll also look at some simple storytelling shortcuts like the arc of change, the arc of stability, and the attitude map. After this webinar, you’ll be fully equipped you to create your own comic world, populate it with strong comic characters, and set them loose in story.

ABOUT YOUR PRESENTER

John Vorhaus has taught and trained writers in 33 countries on five continents (at last count). His writing books, The Comic Toolbox and Creativity Rules! have been helping writers worldwide master their craft for two decades. John has written some two dozen other books, stretching from the sublime (Poole’s Paradise; Lucy in the Sky) to the ridiculous (The Strip-Poker Kit; A Million Random Words), and countless (well, countable) comic scripts for television and film.  He tweets for no apparent reason @TrueFactBarFact and secretly controls the world from www.johnvorhaus.com and www.bafflegabbooks.com. All his books, ebooks and author-narrated audio books can be found at www.amazon.com/author/jv.
