Jennifer Kim is a Los Angeles-based writer, journalist, personal essayist, and producer. She is the daughter of disco-loving immigrants from North and South Korea who settled in Appalachia – where she and her sister were the only Asians in a hillbilly school.
After graduating from UCLA with an MFA in screenwriting, Jennifer worked at KCET-TV (PBS) on puppet shows and in live news, contributed to USA TODAY, LOS ANGELES TIMES, EAST WEST, and was a radio storyteller on KCRW (NPR) before becoming a high school journalism teacher and attending a social justice law school at night.
She's been a P.A., Associate Producer, and Series Producer for award-winning educational shows and documentaries (she even got to hug Mister Rogers!). With her feature and TV writing, Jennifer is a ViacomCBS Writers Mentoring Program Finalist, ISA Grand Prize Winner, and Hopwood Award Winner, and has advanced in Austin, Page, and Final Draft, among others. She was selected for The Coop's New Work Initiative, where she developed work with playwrights.
Jennifer's fish-out-of-water upbringing inspires her stories about misfits and rebels who enjoy disrupting the status quo as they figure themselves out. Grief often is their underlying wound. Her stories blend humor, heart, self-discovery, and social themes with a side of absurdity.
Jennifer recently wrote and produced the short film KOREAN AMERICAN WITCHES SOCIETY, which premiered at the Dances With Films Festival and is on the festival circuit, debuted her first play, and wrote a rise and fall biopic feature, which is being put together by her reps at IAGand Industry Entertainment.
