A new direction for me in my second half of life has allowed me to discover my passion for film and screenwriting.
- I achieved top of class in my Film Production studies at Open Window University and my student film 'Sexed' went on to win Sapling awards and the coveted Pangolin Award. In addition it enjoyed success on the international film festival circuit with 13 nominations and 4 awards.
- I followed up my education in this field with a online Screenwriting course through SA Writers College which earned a distinction and recognition by streaming platform ShowMax who selected my work 'eBhayi' in the top 15 out of 196 entrants into their 'first time directors' feature film competition.
- I was a finalist in the 2023 SA Writers Guilt Muse awards for with my TV script 'Tottermot'.
- A short film I wrote, Liewe Dudu (Afrikaans), was selected by Multichoice (South African Television Broadcaster) for production and I directed that in February 2024.
- I participated in the ISA 30-day screenwriting challenge in 2023 and the work that came from that (Nadia Deconstructed) has so far made the Quarter Finals in the Creative Screenwriting 2024 Unique Voices competition.
With this encouragement I continue to write in various genre's and enjoy adding a sprinkling of comedy or fantasy to allow dramas to address issues without becoming unpalatable. Having had my share of life experience I enjoy exploring the female perspective and the subtlety of unspoken communication. I love this quote by Leonard Bernstein which I've tweaked slightly making work a verb: The "work of art does not answer questions, it provokes them; and its essential meaning is in the tension between the contradictory answers.”
My objective is to spark dialogue through providing different perspectives that encourage understanding and empathy.
