Shapiro's political-environmental activism informs his creative (producing/screenwriting) endeavors -- or perhaps it's the other way around: Shapiro is a leading and well-regarded poltical-environmental activist and organizer living in Ojai, Californa where he's founded and served on the boards of several highly respected, pro-active organizations - including founder, Co-President and Board member of the now venerated Ojai Playwright's Conference; the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, the Ojai Valley Defense Fund and currenly co-founder and Advisory Board member of CFROG (Climate First: Replacing Oil & Gas) that's presently engaged in a County-wide battle to defeat massive expansion of oil & gas drilling, fracking and processing facilities throughout Ventura County - including mounting a legal case that CFROG has brought before the California Supreme Court. Shapiro developed and produced the NBC Movie-Of-The-Week about the founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center of - IN THE LINE OF FIRE - THE MORRIS DEES STORY - starring Corbin Bernsen and Angela Bassett. He's currently producing the seven-hour/seven-part documentary mini-series titled AMERICA FOR SALE that exposes the Trump Administration's on-going actions of destroying large swaths of America's most beautiful national parks and monuments by wide-spread oil, gas, uranium, gold and copper excavation. Shapiro wrote the screenplay and is currently in active development to produce the limited mini-series about the life and times of '60s-'70s political-cultural zeitgeist, Abbie Hoffman. His screenplay is based on the book (Putnam-Tarcher) written by Abbie's younger brother Jack, titled RUN! RUN! RUN! - THE LIVES OF ABBIE HOFFMAN. Shapiro's screenplay has garnered about a dozen honors and awards, including the most recent (June/2019) "Award of Special Mention - Television Pilot" from the Accolade Global Film Competition; it's an "Official Selection" of the New York Socially Relevent Film & Screenplay Festival; an Offical Selection & Laurels from Film Invasion/LA Discover Indie Films; an Offical Selection of the New Media Film Festival and an "Offical Selection" of the XIX Action-On-Film Mega Fest & Film Invasion/Los Angeles festival; the screenplay is a Gold Laurel Winner - Best Screenplay Pilot Los Angeles International Independent Film Awards and is honored by several additional screenplay competitions with more to be announced.
