ISA Presents: Defining Your Voice & Discovering Your Process

International Screenwriters' Association 1 year ago

For nearly ten years, the ISA's Development Slate has been searching for, finding, cultivating, and championing emerging screenwriters. The intent behind the ISA Development Slate has always been to actively develop a writer's material and career, working tirelessly to support them and put them in positions to find success. The ISA is so grateful to help in the journey of finding representation, selling material and launching careers and to continue on as career-long mentors and coaches. To say the ISA is proud of our Development Slate writers would be an understatement. Please join Max Timm as he delves into the ongoing careers of a few of our fabulous writers and digs into their experiences, ups and downs, and their methods of finding success.

DEVELOPMENT SLATE WRITERS:
Alex Rubin is a fixer. A former press manager, she can fix your image. A former Apple Genius, she can fix your phone. A former PA for the Radio City Rockettes, she can fix… anything. And while she doesn't recommend fixing people, her work explores broken families as they, hilariously and tragically, attempt to piece themselves back together. This is, of course, inspired by her own fascinating family of government agents, body snatchers, and cult followers.
Alex writes for film, television, podcasts, and theatre, and aspires to be a showrunner. Her work centers women and queer characters, platforming their seldom-told stories with joy and affection. After all, Buffy the Vampire Slayer taught her how to stand up for herself while delivering a snappy comeback.

Annika Pampel was born and raised in former East - Germany. After her B.F.A. in Theater History and Directing at Bayreuth University in Germany, Annika received a Fulbright scholarship for Indiana University, Bloomington and then completed her education with a Masters in Film Directing at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.
Annika has written and directed several short films, music videos, documentary segments for German & Australian Television and had her own radio show in Germany for two years. Her last short film ‘Crossing Fences’ did a festival run in 2017/18 and won the audience awards at the ‘Short to the Point’ and the ‘Sonoma International Film Festival’, as well as the best drama award at the ‘Anthony Meindl Film Festival’. Her current feature screenplay 'Odium' won the Hollywood writers award at the 'Table read my screenplay' competition sponsored by the ISA and Nickelodeon.

Jeremy Leder is a writer from Long Island, NY. No, he doesn't have an accent. Yes, he does love the beach. And don't tell anyone, but he's a soppy romantic at heart. His writing often blends humor and pathos, ultimately coming back to love in one way or another: how we end up in it, why we fall out of it, and how we make it last. His stories are funny and sad and sometimes a bit outlandish, but that's what love is. It's finding the humor in hardship, the hope in loss, and the deeper story underneath the surface premise. That’s resulted in a host of scripts that tend to make you laugh and then, not long after, cry. These stories have seen him place in the Austin Film Festival, Page International Screenwriting Awards, BlueCat Screenplay Competition, and the ISA Fast Track Fellowship as the Drama Winner and 2022 Fellow.

Yolanda T. Ross is an award-winning multihyphenate and socially driven Actress, Writer, and Producer. After earning an MFA in Creative Writing from Full Sail University, she launched her professional writing career after seeing the lack of diversity in female-driven stories (especially women of color) in film and television. She went on to win several awards for her shorts, The Last Day and Victus. Her short, Drowning placed in the top 10 of the 2020 Pan African Film Festival's John Singleton Short Screenplay Contest.
Her screenplay, Her Favorite Color, placed in the top 25 for the Ermantourage Industry Next II Diversity Competition and was a quarter-finalist for the 1st Annual Stage 32 Drama Screenplay Contest . She recently developed a TV pilot titled We Are Here that focuses on the subject of Human Trafficking from Slavery through the present day which landed her on the development slate for the International Screenwriter's Association.
