Bite Size Oscar History: The First Oscar for Best Picture

The Oscars are a celebration of the filmmaking craft. The 2028 ceremony will be its centennial. The ceremony allows those in the industry to celebrate their peers. It is a glamorous event and is a who’s who of Hollywood royalty as well as its blossoming wunderkind. 

Underneath all the glitz and prestige is an industry where many work tirelessly to bring forth a finished product that educates, inspires, and entertains. The Oscars is the Olympics of the film industry, honoring the best of the best. Movies unite us and recognize our shared human spirit. The best are universal while somehow also being personal.

Silent film Wings won the first Oscar for Best Picture in 1927. It’s a love triangle set during WWI, starring Clara Bow and introduced soon-to-be star Gary Cooper. It touches on class, war, and romance, all topics that are timeless. The screenplay was written by Hope Loring and Louis D. Lighton, with story by John Monk Saunders. The film was directed by William A. Wellman.
